“Counterfeit Pennies,” by Justyn Withay

I was standing in line at the bodega
I was looking for something that’s easy to see
Clerk was yelling about counterfeit pennies
Until the counter guy couldn’t take it anymore
Scene went on as I was walking out of the door
All I heard were some curse words in Spanish
If you don’t know them I guess it sounds pretty brutal
But I swear to god they do this every day

I got back up to the apartment
Toothbrush and James were hanging on the couch with the pets
I sat down with them and we tried watching TV
Signal’s broken but you can make it out sometimes
It comes and goes like a transmission volcano
Once it gets good you know it’s that way for a while
I suppose this could be symbolism
I suppose this could be what you want it to be
